Akshay's reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi grows further with word of mouth

Unlike many a blockbuster films that take a huge opening on the first weekend, recover their investment and either remain stable or take a downslide at the box office, Akshay Kumar's dare devilry filled Khatro Ke Khiladi Level 2 too is taking a similar route though with a slight difference. Instead of slowing down after a 'huge opening' on television, it has shown a consistent jump with every passing day.

Confirms Ashwini Yardi, Programming Head, Colors, "On the first day the AMAP number was 2.9, which is extremely good by all standards. By the third day it was already 3.7. The 9:00PM - 10:00 PM slot on which KKK is currently being aired was earlier rated at 1.2. From 1.2 to being 3.7 is more than 300% jump and naturally we at Colors are quite excited. KKK is a brand for us and such huge success for the second season has reassured our belief in the concept. We had launched our channel with Level 1 of KKK last year and even then its number was 1.5. This is why KKK is the most promoted show on Colors."

Now that the 'opening' has been achieved, how is the channel looking at keeping the momentum up for the show?

"Looking at the way last week has gone, the momentum is pretty much in place. Regarding a huge opening, then well marketing can make you reach to a particular level on the first day but after that it's the content that matters", she reasons, "If that wouldn't have been as strong, the numbers would have lost rather than showing escalation as days had progressed. This pretty much shows that the word of mouth has been immense. We are confident that the momentum would continue in the coming weeks and the proceedings for all contestants too would become more and more interesting from here on."

Of course the show wouldn't have seen the kind of popularity as it has gained today if not for Akshay's informal interaction with the participants and a striking sense of humour.

"Of course yes, that's a major factor", she agrees, "People have loved Akshay's sense of humour in the show. As a mentor who can advice, shout or laugh as per the demand of the situation, he has been an asset to KKK."

Considering the fact that there have been widespread talks around Akshay being paid in crores for each of the episodes of KKK, does the channel feel that the investment has been worth it?

"Well, our policy doesn't allow us to talk about remuneration of people associated with us", she takes a firm stand here. "Of course the figures quoted by different sources are well, just 'source figures'. At the end of the day, it's us and Akshay who know the entire truth. However, this doesn't take away from the fact that the show and Akshay are the perception driver for the channel and we are proud of both."

Black-waala's word is more reliable than critic's" - Mahesh Bhatt

It is common knowledge by now that Pritam's compositions for Tum Mile are already all over on internet even though the album is yet to officially hit the stands. The pirated copy of the songs with credit details intact have been available on number of music websites since the weekend gone by.

Of course the initial reaction of the entire Bhatt camp was that of being shaken and stirred. However, as the dust settled down and realization struck that a partial damage had been done, the cast and crew of the film started looking at quite a few positive aspects of things.

Says Mahesh Bhatt who is always willing to find positive points in the grimmest of situations, "Pirates have declared Tum Mile music a hit. I guess they know more than everyone else. They got to the consumer even before we opened sales. This pretty much speaks volumes about the kind of excitement that the product has generated over the months."

Not everyone associated with the film is excited in a similar manner though. Kunal Deshmukh, whose Jannat was a huge musical success, is disappointed that the music is being downloaded without the consumer spending even a rupee.

"It is disgusting and a direct attack on those very people who continue to hold such a strong view against piracy", he fumes, "Bhatts are known to be trail blazers when it comes to raising a voice against piracy. All these efforts are pushed back when their own product is pirated and that too before its release. It is so sad that we are even talking about it when our album release is still a day away."

"But by not talking about it we won't be able to stop piracy", Mahesh Bhatt has a counter argument here, "After all the black-waala's word is always more reliable than that of the critic! He is the voice of the masses after all. If he has managed to make the music a HIT then well, let's accept that rather than running away from reality."

Composer Pritam though is distraught that Tum Mile is being heard online.

"The music of Tum Mile is one of my finest and deserves to be respected", he says, "It deserves to be heard on a proper CD rather than through illegal downloads. I hope and pray that the damage is minimal and the music follows a good sales graph once it hits the stands."

Kunal does try to bring on a smile too even in the most adverse of circumstances, "I am with Pritam when he says that. When I go through social networking sites and see people talking good things about Tum Mile and recommending it to people around, it only makes me further confident about the product that I have in hand. In a way, at least one scare factor is off because the music seems to have been widely accepted."

Abhishek Bachchan calls for his Lexus to Nashik, on Raavan location

Mani Ratnam might be shooting for Raavan in one of the most beautiful and finest locations but the cast and crew are having a tough time reaching the shooting site. Abhishek Bachchan, therefore, has called for his Lexus all the way to Nashik so that he can travel with his wife through all the bad and foggy roads.

A source from the unit reveals, "We are currently shooting in Malshej Ghats, on Pune-Nashik highway. The place we all are put up in is an hour away from the location. The entire unit with the cast travels for more than an hour to reach the location. Abhishek wasn't happy with the car provided to them for their journey back and fro. He called for his Lexus (SUV) and drives it with his wife Aishwarya to the shoot."

The source continues, "The roads are very terrible and there is too much of fog on the way while driving. AB junior manages to drive on the awful roads and reaches on time too. This is a month long schedule and has the Bachchan duo, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi along with the South actors.

Madhur Bhandarkar travels to Russia for yet another felicitation

Madhur Bhandarkar is traveling to Moscow for a ceremony where he would be felicitated by Sovex Port Film, Ministry of Culture of Russia, for his work in Fashion, Page 3 and Traffic Signal.

This is yet another international award for this filmmaker who has already seen three National Awards coming his way for his work in Chandni Bar, Page 3 & Traffic Signal.

Considering the fact that his films have been making some good impact in Russia of late, what does he feel could be a possible reason for Russians embracing his work?

"I guess it's the similarity in the socio-economic conditions in both the countries", comments Madhur after pondering on the observation for a while, "Both the countries also have quite a lot of similarities when it comes to cultural background. Traditionally we have boasted of a similar heritage. Issues too are common though the magnitude differs. All these factors combined together should bring the two countries even closer by means of cinema. I would definitely love to see that not just mine but films made by other Indian filmmakers also start getting more visibility in this territory."

Regarding the honour that he is getting in Moscow, he comments, "I am extremely honoured with this award to my name and I am glad that I am getting a chance to represent my nation once again. Already I have been honoured here with the screening of my film Fashion at recently concluded Moscow International Film Festival where my film was given a standing ovation. Also my film Chandni Bar was given accolades in the same festivals years back. I feel really lucky and blessed that I am getting another chance to represent my nation here. I thank all the audience there in India, all my supporters, the team of all my films that I have been awarded for and of course the Ministry of Culture of Russia."

Meanwhile his Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer Jail is all set for release on 6th November.

I am unprofessional? How about whose cheques have bounced?" - Urvashi Sharma

Urvashi Sharma was in for a rude shock when she woke up one Saturday morning. A tabloid reported the news of her being replaced in Revathy directed Aap Ke Liye Hum [also starring Jaya Bachchan, Ayesha Takia and Madhavan] due to 'unprofessional conduct'. Searching for answers, she read the report completely only to find the story being told from one side alone.

"The producers are accusing me of unprofessional conduct on the basis of my late arrival on the shoot. Hello! Do you want to hear the real truth? The fact is that their cheque had bounced and in spite of me making repeated calls over last couple of months, no one has responded. Please, I am not here for charity and if someone out there feels that getting bitter over a bounced cheque is being unprofessional, then well, I am glad to be called one,'' fumes Urvashi, who is completely disappointed with the turn of events.

Apparently, the makers also announced that actors like Sonal Chauhan and Priyanka Kothari were being considered for the role that was meant for Urvashi. It is but obvious that Urvashi was bound to talk about the bounced cheque, then why did they get take on a suicide mission of accusing her of being unprofessional?

"I don't know really,'' shrugs Urvashi, "Perhaps they thought that I would run back to them and try to reconcile things. Sorry, what reconciliation are we talking about? First you ask me to report for the shoot without any signing amount to which I reluctantly agree too. Then you give me a post-dated cheque after a month, which bounces. This is followed by two months of following up by me and my manager and no one responds. That was humiliating. And then I get to read in the tabloids that I have been replaced. Can someone explain who is being unprofessional here?"

She also can't forget the embarrassment that she had to go through with when the bank informed her about the bounced cheque.

"It wasn't that the details were wrong on the cheque or there were some scribbles that made it impossible for it to be cashed. Instead it happened due to insufficient funds. Can you imagine how embarrassed I was?'' questions Urvashi.

So is she calling it quits as far as this movie goes, or is she open for any renegotiations?

Laughs Urvashi, who is living the adage of 'once bitten twice shy'. "Perhaps now if they want me to act in this film, they better pay my entire remuneration in advance. There is a saying that goes 'You can fool some people all the time. You can fool all the people some of the times. But you cannot fool all the people all the time.' I guess I fall under the last category."

Colgate Palmolive signs SRK as its brand ambassador

When it comes to brand endorsements there can be no bigger star than Shah Rukh Khan. After endorsing countless top brands such as Pepsi, ICICI Bank, Nokia, Hyundai, Tag Heuer etc, SRK will now be seen endorsing yet another premiere brand. According to reliable sources, SRK has been roped in as a brand ambassador by FMCG major Colgate Palmolive. The deal with the superstar was signed a couple of days ago.

Colgate-Palmolive is a key player in the oral care category - toothpaste, toothbrush, toothpowder and whitening products. Now with SRK endorsing Colgate, things are only going to get bigger and better for the FMCG giant. As for SRK, after bagging this premium endorsement deal, he has indeed proved that they don't call him 'King Khan' for nothing.

Neil Nitin Mukesh takes on Ranbir Kapoor, Jail to clash with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

The release date of Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail has been announced. The film would now be releasing on 6th November, the same day when Ranbir Kapoor's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is slated to arrive. This would pretty much be an event to look forward to, as both Neil and Ranbir find a place for themselves in the top bracket of youngsters (including Imran Khan) that Bollywood currently boasts of.

Confirms a close associate of Madhur Bhandarkar, "Yes, Jail is positively coming on 6th November. After some pondering, it was eventually decided to bring Jail on this date. It's a good day to bring on the film."

Trade is expected to be upbeat with the clash of the two films since both Jail and Raj Kumar Santoshi directed Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani have good credentials to boast of. While Neil made people stand up and take notice of him all over again with the release of New York, the film that brought industry out of a slump after ending a six month long draught, Ranbir too had shone in Bachna Ae Haseeno that released last year.

Both actors did face some hard times at the box office in the early stages of their career though. Even though Neil and Ranbir were immensely appreciated in their debut films (Johnny Gaddaar and Saawariya respectively), box office wasn't too kind at them. Neil did face a setback in Aa Dekhen Zara though Ranbir bounced back with Bachna Ae Haseeno. Meanwhile, Neil too was soon back in the reckoning with New York.

This makes Jail and Ajab Prem.... really crucial releases for both Neil and Ranbir. While Neil has given it all to this hard hitting drama by National Award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar, Ranbir too has been having an eventful season with Wake Up Sid (arriving on 2nd October) preceding the release of Ajab Prem.....

An industry follower comments, "Since Imran has suffered two back to back setbacks in Kidnap followed by Luck, the battle line is now drawn between Neil and Ranbir. Of course Imran has it in him to bounce back and he certainly will eventually. However, as of now, all eyes are on Neil and Ranbir."

"Stakes are particularly high for Neil because Ranbir still has some back up in the form of Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year and Rajneeti. For Neil, Jail is a crucial film since he hasn't signed anything else and has placed all his bets on Jail. The film has to work for him by all means. Given the fact that Madhur has decided to take on competition with Ajab Prem...' it shows his confidence in the product. This will certainly be a clash to look out for this season", he concludes.

Big B starrer Paa to release on Children's Day

The highly-rated Cheeni Kum director Balki is releasing his extremely unusual role-reversal drama Paa on November 13, as a tribute to Children's Day. "It's a film about the child within the man and the man within the child. And I can't think of a better tribute to the child than Children's Day," says Balki, who completed the shooting of the film in England recently.

After shooting his two feature films Cheeni Kum and now Paa in England, Balki wants to return to the country again. "We shot Paa in my favourite location England. Throughout the stint in Cambridge, we were at sea, never on land. I love shooting in London. I shot my first two films there. If I had my way, I'd shoot all my films there." Balki took up the challenge of projecting the Big B like never before. "In Cheeni Kum, I really didn't have to do anything. I made him play himself. Here in Paa, I had to bring out that child within him, which has always been there. We tapped that part of him. It wasn't easy for Amitji to play a child at heart. Fortunately, Abhishek and Vidya Balan too are extremely intelligent actors. She has played such a charming mom. Throughout the film, they behave as if Amitji is their son. For Abhishek, this was his chance to get even with his dad."

Any regrets about not casting Tabu again? "After what she did with Amitji in Cheeni Kum it wasn't possible to cast her in Vidya's role." Balki is not bothered with how the audience will accept the two actors in reversed roles. "There's no point in making a film if it doesn't push envelopes. I won't do a film that doesn't challenge me and my actors."

Another ongoing leitmotif in Balki's cinema is the music of Ilaiyaraja. "He's God. He has been a major source of inspiration. I don't think that India has known a better music composer than him. Sadly, one-half of India has not heard him enough."

For Cheeni Kum, Balki specifically asked Ilaiyaraja for tunes from his Tamil films. "I wanted Hindi moviegoers to hear those times. Even in Paa, I've transposed some of his South Indian tunes into Hindi. It's not that important to be original. It's more important to do what you believe in."

Balki is miffed that the Big B's Progeria look has been leaked out. "Fortunately, that's only a part of his look. No one came on the set to see how he looks on camera. The makeup person was given a computer-generated picture of Amitji. He improvised a lot on that and added traits from real Progeria patients."

Bengali film which picked Namastey London scenes asked to deposit its collections

On Tuesday morning, the appeals court in Kolkata ordered that the entire Box-Office collections of the Bengali film Poran Jay Jolaye Re be deposited in the court. The film which was released a couple of months ago to a rousing welcome in Bengal is said to have so far collected whopping figures at the Box-Office.

By depositing the entire collection at the Box-Office, the producers Venkatesh Films of the Bengali film stand to lose a substantial amount of money.

Says Vipul, "They've to deposit every single penny that the film has collected. The judgment of the appeals court says that the 'entire' Box-Office collection of the Bengali film be deposited in court. It is historic in terms of violation of copyright infringement. To know the court can stop a film is a clear signal that plagiarism can be fought. The judgment will now be a reference point for all plagiarism cases. It was needed. Every filmmaker contemplating plagiarism will now think twice."

The alleged copyright violators of the Bengali film can now appeal in the Supreme Court. As for the money that the court has confiscated from the Bengali film's collection, it is now legally a part of a damage suit that Vipul chooses to file.

"However I don't want any monetary compensation. That wasn't my intention. I wanted to make a strong case against copyright infringement. The honourable court has done the needful. I think its victory for all us filmmakers. We used to make a joke about copyright laws by saying copyright means the right to copy. I think the joke has now ended."

Akshay Kumar who's the co-producer of Namastey London has decided not to sign any film that he knows to be an illegal copy

Says Akshay, "By God's grace, all my films seem to be original. Even Vipul's Action Replay which some people think is a copied from elsewhere (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) is original. People who spread these rumours should be careful. Copying films is as serious an offence as accusing an original work of being a copy."

Shilpa Shetty is frantically learning Indian recipes for her restaurant business

Shilpa is India's new mistress of spices to Britain. And she's taking her job very seriously. It looks like a sabbatical from acting for Shilpa as she gets busy in her new role as an international cuisine queen.

And the best thing about her new role is, Shilpa doesn't want to go the Tarla Dalal or Madhur Jaffrey way. No instant cook books for the latest recipe Rani. Shilpa wants to go the whole hog.

On the lookout for the rarest and most exotic and undiscovered dishes Shilpa will now cruise to the remotest parts of India in search of new recipes.

In coming months and years, Shilpa hopes to spread the aroma of Indian spices and curries to every part of the world. In her new avatar as the part-owner of a reputed chain of restaurants and Indian cuisine in Britain, Shilpa Shetty is adamant to prove she is not just a glamorous name for the franchise as she was accused of being in cricket.

Shilpa intends to lend not just her name and glamorous persona to her new food-brand 'Shilpa's Gourmet Creations' she's also determined to be a hands-on mistress of spices.

The lady currently more an entrepreneur than an actress, is learning as many recipes from Britain's celebrity chef Andy Varma as she can. Once she returns to India, Shilpa will enter her mom's kitchen and get to part with all her famous secret recipes.

Says Shilpa excitedly from London. "Everyone presumed I was as big a novice at cuisine. Not true. I've always enjoyed cooking. And I love cooking for my friends and family. Now with Raj (Kundra) and me becoming part of Andy Varma's chain, my interest in cooking has turned into a passion."

Shilpa has now gone from skimming through trade magazines to scrutinizing recipe books. The dishy actress is learning new dishes everyday from master chef Andy Varma

Determined not to let the cynics snigger about her new role as cuisine queen, Shilpa says, "You'd be surprised to know how popular Indian food is in England. Do you know the country's favourite dish is chicken tikka masala? I want them to discover our food beyond the obvious currys and biryanis. And all our Indian snacks and meals will contain under 10 percent fat."

To discover the food of India, Shilpa is now a complete foodie. "Not eating, but preparing. Nowadays I'm a sucker for recipes."

Poppadom in Memorium. That could well be the signature chant for Shilpa Shetty's new avatar as a cuisine queen.

From being called a 'poppadom' by Jade Goody to providing bonus papads with her new lineup of cuisine in Britain, Shilpa has come a long way. And she doesn't deny it.

"It's true. Jade, God bless her soul, used to call me 'Poppadam' on Big Brother. It used to hurt. Today we've papad as bonus for all the snacks and meals that I'm associated with. It's really ironic."

However, she stresses that her food offer is in no way homage to Jade Goody, as reported in the British press.
